Alto

The Latin name for Alto is a reference to the altitude of our vineyards and the estate’s own aspirations of excellence. Since 1920, only five winemakers have crafted our portfolio of internationally acclaimed red wines.

Our history dates back to 1693, when it formed part of the larger Groenrivier farm granted by Simon van der Stel. Wine only became the farm's focus in the 1920s when the Malan family began to transform the untamed land into vineyards. 

Our estate's sound reputation for producing world-class red wines can be ascribed, in part, to its excellent terroir. Located in the Stellenbosch Winelands, it is no coincidence that the area is known, locally, as the Golden Triangle. In summer, when the vines are drenched in sunshine, the late-afternoon sea breezes cool the grapes, lengthening the ripening period and preserving the complex flavours of our noble varietals. 

Bertho van der Westhuizen is only the fifth Alto winemaker in our estate's eight decade history. His sheer devotion to the Stellenbosch Winelands and its produce continues to lead our estate into the future. 

While Alto wines are available across South Africa as well as internationally, a trip out to the Stellenbosch Winelands for a day of wine tasting and charcuterie platters is highly recommended. Head down to red wine country for an Alto wine tasting, wine and paté pairing or to buy any of our wines.

Alto M.P.H.S

A dark lively red blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a perfumed red berry nose and a subtle nuttiness, that follows through onto the palate highlighting the beautiful austerity and depth of flavour. 

A wine perfectly paired with grilled squid with Salsa Verde sauce or Bourbon based pork loin. 

Alto Cabernet Sauvignon 

Plum red in colour with cherries and black olives on the nose followed through to full bodied red wine with a clean tannic structure. 

A Cabernet that pairs well with a red wine slow braised beef short rib or a roasted duck breast with a black cherry sauce. 

Alto Shiraz 

Ruby red in colour with a smoky nose laced with under tones of berry, followed through to a full bodied wine with delicate spice and a good tannic background. 

This Shiraz can be enjoyed with dishes like a rich oxtail casserole or a butterflied five spiced and garlic lamb cutlet. 

Alto Rouge 

Dark ruby red in colour, this red blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pettit Verdot, with a powerful blackberry nose that lingers onto the pallet with a hint of toast vanilla and chocolate adding to its complexity. 

This wine pairs well with homemade hamburgers,  blue cheese and fig sauce or a red wine and mushroom risotto. 

Alto Fine Old Vintage 

Ruby red in colour with a melange of honey and chocolate with a hint of cinnamon on the nose followed through to a rich creamy palate that would perfectly pair to full flavoured cheeses such as an aged Gruyére or a rich dark chocolate torte.
