Morgenster Wine & Olive Estate in Somerset West, 35 minutes from Cape Town, is at the gateway to the Western Cape wine-growing region. It is a thriving olive and wine farm dating back to 1711. The painstaking attention to detail by visionary owner, Giulio Bertrand, has resulted in Morgenster producing wines and olive oils rated among the best in the world.
In the stylish tasting room visitors can enjoy vertical tastings of early vintage Bordeaux style red blends; the estate’s Italian Collection nebbiolo, Sangiovese rosé and a super Tuscan blend; and the NU (pronounced “new”) range of single varietal wines from younger vines. In addition to wine tasting, an extra virgin olive oil and olive tasting of intriguing complexity adds a distinct highlight to a Morgenster visit.
Tasting room hours: Monday - Sunday and Public Holidays: 10h00 - 17h00. Closed: Good Friday and 25 December.
The restaurant, 95 At Morgenster, adjacent to the tasting room offers diners tranquil views of a reed lined dam and the Helderberg. It is a partnership between chef patron Giorgio Nava and Giulio Bertrand and serves authentic Milanese cuisine prepared from the highest quality local and imported ingredients paired with the finest of wines. The striking artwork on the walls is part of Giulio Bertrand’s collection of art from prominent South African artists.
The wine list features Morgenster wines and highlights the farm’s vintage strategy. Guests can order all the wines sold and served in the Tasting Room, including the older Estate vintages, and there is a selection of wines sold by the glass. If diners wish to take home Morgenster products the Tasting Room processes orders and has the stock ready after the meal.
95 At Morgenster opening hours: Tuesday – Sunday, 12.00 – 15.30
Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 19.00 – 21.30.
